Going Green with GMTMA: Inspiring Students Through Clean Air & People-Powered Programming
While every day is Earth Day at GMTMA… April is Earth Month! This year, Earth Day is celebrating its 55th anniversary on Tuesday, April 22nd. Spring and summer environmental programming are in full swing. We offer two programs for schools and summer camps called Clean Air Out There and People-Powered Green Machines. Now you might be thinking, what are these programs? Keep reading to find out!
Clean Air Out There is catered to PreK-2nd graders, focusing on improving air quality and choosing to move with more sustainable travel options. We present science experiments and demonstrations to show that air has some weight, what clean air versus dirty air looks like, and what idling is. We also demonstrate how alternative transportation methods, like walking and biking to school, can help prevent traffic jams and congestion. Students get to “drive their car” and “get on the bus,” getting their bodies moving.
People-Powered Green Machines is catered to 3rd-5th graders. It focuses on learning what air pollution is, the health effects of poor air quality, and ways they can be part of a cleaner air solution – such as walking and biking on short trips rather than driving, while also emphasizing the importance of safety. We also present two super cool science experiments to complement what they learn.
Through the Clean Air Out There and People Powered Green Machine programs, students are provided with the knowledge to better the environment and their own health. Spreading environmental awareness curates individual change, which helps lead to larger positive impacts within our local communities!
