PARK(ing) Day is a yearly event that started in San Francisco in 2005. Over the years, this event has grown into a worldwide affair that promotes positivity in our communities. Every year people come together to temporarily repurpose street parking spaces into small parks to advocate for a safer community. The aimed focus is for everyone to prioritize streets for walking, biking, and transit. What we love about this event is the creative social spaces people design. This is an opportunity for people to come together, spend time outdoors, play, and express, art, culture, and, creativity.

One of the best things about this event is that it’s 100% free, and you can start planning your event today! Here are some ideas for how to make sure your parklet is extra fun:

  1. If you have room inside the structure, you could consider having seating areas or other types of seating furniture such as cushions or chairs and tables so people can sit down and relax.

  1. You could even set up a book exchange box so that people can leave books they’ve finished reading in exchange for new ones!

  1. Put out plants or flowers so people can appreciate nature while they’re there.

  1. Have games available like hopscotch, ring toss, Jenga blocks, bocce ball, chess sets, and cards—this is a great way to bring people together!

  1. Use materials like wood or canvas for a temporary structure that can be easily moved around. You could also use cardboard boxes!

  1. Serve food and drinks from your parklet. This will make it even more inviting to visitors.

  1. Set up some music players so that people can play their favorite tunes while they’re hanging out in your parklet, or even start a dance party!

Our favorite parklet will always be our very own Princeton Parklet. It has it all, including ample seating and greenery and it is close to restaurants, coffee shops, and other shops in the heart of Princeton.
