February is American Heart Month, a time to focus on cardiovascular health and the small, everyday choices that can make a big difference for our hearts. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly 1 in every 4 deaths. Almost half of U.S. adults live with high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease.

While those numbers can feel overwhelming, there’s good news. Many heart-related risks can be reduced through healthy habits, especially regular physical activity.

Why Physical Activity Is So Important

Your heart works hard every day. It beats about 100,000 times daily and pumps nearly 2,000 gallons of blood throughout your body. Regular movement helps strengthen the heart muscle, allowing it to pump blood more efficiently. This can lead to:

  • Lower resting heart rate
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Improved circulation
  • More flexible arteries that allow blood to flow easily

Exercise also supports maintaining a healthy weight, managing blood pressure, and reducing the risk of heart disease. Even small amounts of activity matter! Just 5 to 10 minutes of walking a day can help build endurance and improve heart health.

Walking and Biking: Simple Ways to Strengthen Your Heart

Walking and biking are two of the most accessible and effective ways to stay active. Both activities get your heart pumping, and staying active can reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 35%. Cycling also increases your metabolic rate while being gentle on your joints, making it a great option for people of all ages and fitness levels.

The best part? These activities don’t require a gym membership, just a safe place to move and a little motivation.

A Personal Ride for Heart Health

One of my favorite biking memories is riding with my dad on Long Beach Island, starting in Beach Haven and riding to Barnegat Light and back during the summer of 2019. We biked about 21 miles, covering most of the island on flat, paved roads. Perfect for relaxed beach biking. Long Beach Island stretches about 18 miles, making it an ideal destination for riders looking to enjoy fresh air, ocean views, and a fun, manageable ride.
